There’s Never Really an “End”

Today is the last day of classes for the spring semester.  Wait, what?

I have NO IDEA where the time went.  This semester went by so quickly.  I feel like I just came back from winter break.  Because this semester is coming to a sudden end, this also means that so does my blog.  I have really enjoyed keeping up with Boilermaker Lacrosse.  I learned a lot is my COM407 class, and I am looking forward to applying all that I have learned in the future.

I hope that you, the reader, have also gotten something out of this blog from the past few months.  I also hope that you learned more about the sport of lacrosse–and especially the Purdue Men’s Lacrosse team!

Keep up the team in the future by following their Twitter account (@PurdueMensLax).  Also, keep up with other lacrosse news with InsideLacrosse.

There’s never really an end to things like this–my time writing this blog doesn’t just disappear, it simply evolves.

Wrapping Up the Season

The regular season has now come to an end and the Boilermakers are headed to the conference tournament. To wrap up the great season, I created a Soundslides with pictures and audio from the win over Illiniois.  Thank you to Coach Sanderson for allowing me onto the field to snap these pictures!  Check it out to get the feel of a lacrosse game:

What Comes Next?

The Purdue Men’s Lacrosse regular season came to a close when the team beat Toledo this past Saturday.

The team is now preparing to play Missouri on Friday and Iowa on Saturday in the conference tournament. The championship game will take place on Sunday in St. Louis.

After the conference tournament, the winner will receive an automatic bid to Nationals in Orange County on May 11-16. Along with the eight automatic bids for the conference winners, there are also bids for the next eight teams.

The spring semester is quickly coming to an end, so continue to cheer on the Boilermakers on their “Road to OC” by following the team on Twitter (@PurdueMensLax).

Enjoy It While You Can

April, and May are arguably the best three months for sports–at least this is true for basketball, baseball, hockey, and (you guessed it!) lacrosse.

There are plenty of reasons why April and May are great months in the world of sports, but this is just a quick overview.

This Elite Daily article breaks down why these four sports are best enjoyed in April and May. It also gives a quality shoutout to college lacrosse and explains the rapid growth of the sport.

A Quick Season Review

  • The Purdue Men’s Lacrosse team is making up the game against Indiana University today (Saturday) at 1pm.
  • Including the IU game, there are 4 games left in the regular season.
  • After those games, the team will open conference play.
  • The underclassmen make it very obvious that the team is set up for success for the next few seasons after this one.
  • The new talent of the freshmen along with the expertise of the seniors can make for a deadly team in the later part of this season. As long as they keep their cool and believe in themselves, the team has an opportunity to finish out the season strong.

How to Become a Fearless Goalie

When I was growing up, I played soccer. Yes, I was the typical soccer kid. My least favorite season was when I was chosen as goalie. I don’t remember volunteering for this position–I’m pretty sure I was chosen because I was the tallest. No matter how much of the goal I could reach, I was terrible. The biggest problem: I was terrified when the ball would fly at my face. I much preferred the ball to stay at my feet. I felt a lot safer.

I’ve never quite understood how people want to be goalie–no matter the sport. I was reading this article on how to prepare young lacrosse players to become a “fearless goalie.”

The article explains the equipment that is important to buy for young goalies.  After all, purchasing the right equipment is the smartest thing one can do to make sure they stay safe.  It also explains how beneficial the “yes” drill can be to rising players.

Together, the right equipment and the right drills are how to become a fearless goalie.

5 Things I Learned at My First Lacrosse Game

Just like any sport, lacrosse has a learning curve.  Here are 5 things I quickly learned while at my first lacrosse game.

  1. It is really hard to tell who is which player when they are on the field because everyone wears a helmet.  I recommend having a list of the names and numbers handy so you can reference it whenever you need.
  2. You know how at a soccer game a player has to chase down the ball when it goes out of bounds?  In lacrosse, they keep extra balls around the edge of the field so no one has to waste a ton of time running after the ball that flew out of bounds.  This makes a lot of sense because those balls can end up far away from the field.
  3. Just like every other sport, some of the parents take the game VERY SERIOUSLY.  Just let it happen.  Also, sometimes the over-excited parents can more interesting than the game.
  4. In men’s lacrosse, slashing is an illegal stick check to the helmet, arms, body or back.  Sometimes, the line between what is legal and illegal is gray (and intense, very intense).
  5. If there isn’t a viewable score board, it isn’t a terrible idea to keep track of the score on your own.  The scores can get up into the high teens sometimes, and you can easily forget which team has how many points.
